Celebrate the tradition and artistry of Hispanic culture at the Heard Museum’s 10th Annual Spanish Market, Arizona’s only Spanish Market on Saturday and Sunday, November 12 & 13, 2011, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Spanish Market is presented by SRP.
Strolling mariachis, dancers and artwork by Hispanic artists from Arizona and New Mexico highlight this festive, casual and friendly annual marketplace, the largest of its kind in Arizona. Chat with more than 65 artists as they sell a range of distinctive and unique artwork. With art in every price range, Spanish Market offers buyers a wide selection of objects from different Hispanic traditions including santos, pottery, embroidery, furniture making, painting, printmaking and silver and tinwork.
The Café at the Heard Museum Phoenix will offer a menu of festive and traditional foods. The Spanish Market marks the end of the month-long CALA biannual festival.
On Saturday, see CALA artists at work during a special demonstration. Mariachis will stroll the grounds on Saturday and Sunday. The Café at the Heard Museum will offer a menu of festive and traditional foods and folklorico dancers will perform in Steele Auditorium.
This year’s signature artists are husband-and-wife team Veronica and Gabriel Sandoval. This talented duo specialize in the ancient art of repousse, a form of embossing that became popular in Spain in the 12th century and made its way to Mexico along with other Spanish influences. After extensively researching the history of this nearly-lost art form, the Sandovals chose to incorporate additional repousse techniques that were common in Eastern European designs.
COST: free with suggested donation; each person donating $10 or more will receive a museum pass.

Best Places For Free Jams

Expanding on last week’s blog about where to go to mooch a free movie, this week will focus on the best places in the Phoenix area to catch free music.
No matter what your taste in tunes, Phoenix has a space that offers a preview local talent. The venues range from open air to small coffee shops, but all share a love for spreading good music.
If you don’t mind the heat in the summer, there are several parks in the Phoenix area that offer free concert series. The “Concert In the Park” series is hosted at Desert Foothills Park. A different performer is featured each Sunday from 5 to 7pm.
The recently opened Phoenix Civic Space hosts a “Third Friday” music series each month. From 6:30 to 8:30pm every third Friday of the month, the series features a new local band. Past performers have included Kinch, Turn Back and the Matthew Reveles Band.
Looking for a place to entertain the kids while you enjoy quality tunes? The McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park hosts a “June Free Concert Series” from May 3 until July 5 at 7:30pm. Each week will feature a different music genre. Admission to the park is free and there is a small train ride to amuse the kiddos.
For those wanting a more intimate environment in which to enjoy their music, there are several smaller venues hosting free concerts in and around Phoenix. If you are a jazz fan, visit the new Intercontinental Montelucia Resort & Spa in Scottsdale. Every Friday the Kasbah Bar in the resort offers a smooth jazz artist from 6 to 9pm. This venue is great if you are looking for an upscale experience, as cigars and cocktails are available to enjoy.
Is it blues you fancy? Then enjoy music, fresh air and free coffee at the “Blues Brunch”. Hosted by Stinkweeds music store in Phoenix, artist Mikel Lander performs acoustic blues from noon to 2pm.
