Mark’s Street Beat

Welcome to Mark's Street Beat Blog

Dec2007 077.JPG

First allow me to introduce myself. My name is Mark. I'm a 33 year old professional (technical/computers/software). The main reason that I'll be bloggin' here is that I'm a "SoDo" (South Downtown) resident. My aim is to share my urban experience with anyone curious enough to read or those already sharing this lifestyle with me. I can have some pretty strong opinions but I think I'm also open minded. I'm going to speak my mind so take it or leave it or maybe convince me that I'm wrong.

Metro Phoenix is full of transplants, many of whom come from small towns and suburbs from all over the U.S. Having never lived in an urban setting, many of these people do not know what is missing in the burbs. It seems many think that the Scottsdale restaurants are glamorous and the nightclub scene is Hollywood. Sure, there is some fancy facade, maybe some flames out front and some decent eats, but there's no movie stars. Paying 10 bucks for a beer to look out and see that you're in another strip mall parking lot kind of ruins the mood I think. Waiting in line to enter some crowded club where the DJ is blasting "Pour some Sugar on Me" (Def Leopard) is....well, I'd rather stay home and watch the cacti grow. I know pop culture will always be popular but Phoenix is the 5th largest city in the U.S. now. There has to be more people out there with taste for something better. So I moved downtown.

Lyle helped me find a very affordable, two bedroom, 1930 built craftman style bungalow walking distance from Chase Field and U.S. Airways. Good question. What is affordable in Mark's opinion? Well, I put 20% down and my mortgage plus taxes and insurance comes to $920 a month. I moved downtown summer of 2007 and have been very pleased with my decision. I have a back yard, a big covered front porch and a walkable lifestyle. And most importantly, welcome back culture!

If you haven't heard downtown Phoenix is coming up. There is tons of big stuff happening like the light rail, ASU campus, new hotel, huge addition to the convention center, medical school and research centers etc. I will talk about this stuff a little as I hear of it. These are the anchors that will bring in the smaller businesses. They will create the foot traffic that will allow the mom and pop restaurants, the boutiques, art galleries, coffee shops, live music venues to grow and thrive. So yes, Phoenix is up and coming. I knew that when I moved here. What I was suprised to find is how much was already here. Downtown Phoenix already had it going on, in it's own way. More to come on that note. I have to prepare for a weekend of snowboarding Mt Hood up in Oregon.

Ever been?  Very small venue, gotta love that.  I'm going next month to check out "Steel Train", Jun 24th.  Check 'em out on Myspace.  This will be my first time seeing a show there.  Seems like a pretty cool place to see a band.  Have a tasty, frothy, adult beverage at the Lost Leaf and walk around the corner to see a band.  Sounds like a good Tuesday night to me.  http://www.modified.org/

Dbacks got swept by the Cubs. If you're a Dbacks fan you probably heard about the sweep a few times from some acquaintance who used to live some two hours from Chicago, considers themselves to be "from Chicago" and glorifies the city and the team that they left behind for some sunshine in the Desert. Ha ha. Yeah, that was sort of aimed at a certain person. If you left your glorious hometown (aka Boston, New York, Chicago, San Fran, LA etc) and you're settled here in the valley I think it's time you get on board to support your home-team folks. Common! If you're hometown was so wonderfully perfect why did you leave it? Plus, many of these touted teams (Bosox, Yanks) are not even in the National League. Also, we know you are really from Northern Maine. That's not Boston. You can actually get tickets and go to games here. So get on board!

Perhaps you're just confused and don't know how to behave. Someone has to establish some guidelines so I guess i'll take a stab at it. First the vocabulary:

Hometown team:

1) The town-you-grew-up-in's team

2) The team from the town you claim you grew up in even though you lived 2 hours from it and perhaps not even in the same state

3) The team that YOU left behind for better weather, cheaper cost of living etc, etc,

Home-team:

1) The Dbacks

2) The team that plays closest to where you currently live

Interleague play (From MLB website):

For the first time in Major League Baseball history, teams from the
American League and National League competed in regular season,
head-to-head competition during the 1997 campaign. For the first five seasons of Interleague Play, each division
played against the same division from the other league (NL East vs. AL
East, NL Central vs. AL Central and NL West vs. AL West). As of the
2002 season, a new format to Interleague Play was instituted where
teams play Interleague games against various divisions.

OK, that established here are some guidelines:

For interleague play:

During interleague play you may sport your hometown team's gear but you must still root for your home-team. If you feel you
must do this secretly because of familial or homie pressures that is acceptable. If you are talked du-du to from home-team fans due to your choice of sporting hometown team's gear you must eat it. To keep quiet, smile and take a bow is appropriate. To live in AZ and talk du-du to home team fans at Chase Field is strictly
prohibited.

Regular season play:

If your hometown team is in the American League you may root for them throughout the season (see above for interleague play). However, you must also root for your home team. Yes, Dbacks are in the National League in case you did not know. If your hometown team is in the National League you may only root for them when they are not playing your home-team and when they are not jeopardizing your home-team's play off chances.

World Series:

If your hometown team and home-team happen to meet in the World Series you must root for your home-team unless you go to your hometown team's park. There it is your choice. At no time during this series shall you sport hometown team gear in Arizona. If your hometown team wins this series you may then sport your hometown team gear.

For all you Detroit transplants:  My home town team, the Tigers will be in town to take on the Dbacks the weekend of May 16th for a rare inter-league three game series.  I could only get upper deck tickets for the Saturday and Sunday games.  I wouldn't wait much longer to get tickets if you want to go.

Yes, I ate the underdog tonight.  OK, that's not the whole truth.  I actually ate two "underdog" hot dogs at The Roosevelt Tavern at 816 N Third St just South of Roosevelt St.  (Third is a one way heading South.)  They have great beers on tap.  The "Arrogant Bastard", a San Diego micro brew has a nice bite and is sure to leave you feeling relaxed.  I've never been disappointed by a glass of wine off of their wine list either.  Anyways, back to the dog, they steam it with Tecate beer and grill the bun inside out.  Best hot dog I've ever had.  The "Dagwood" sandwich is a meaty treat as well.

Every time I go I find good conversation with the patrons as well as the cuties (Tina and Sarah tonight) working the bar.  The Roosevelt serves food until 11pm nightly, open until midnight weekdays, 2 am weekends, closed on Monday.

And I hate how long it takes to drive across Texas, even just the pan handle.  May all the Spurs be forced to drive across Texas and back after they blow their two game lead and lose the series.  Shniffff Shniffff Shnifff.  (I don't believe in curses, but just in case.)
