The collaborative work of Renee and Natalie Mosier will be on display at the Coup de Grace Gallery on Friday night, September 5th from 6 to 10 PM.

Renee and Natalie Mosier combine their talents to create unique wall sculptures.  Renee uses a thermo-forming technique to mold Plexiglas into fluid, freeform shapes.  Natalie then reverse paints abstracts on the pieces, bringing out the beauty of the sculpted text. 

Their collaborative works reevaluate picture space by blending together sculpture and painting as well as adding texture and dimension.  In developing this new medium, Renee and Natalie have created luminous surfaces resembling liquid, metal and glass simultaneously creating a feast for the eye and playground for the imagination.

One of our featured Artists for May, Julio Cesar Rodarte states:

As an artist, I wonder how my ideas are originated. I guess at times they are spontaneous and at times those ideas are thought over and over. The Human Head is a structured painting that reflects the use of  colors as in my other artwork. It conveys my own idea that everything in this world is under a certain time and space; just like our thoughts that happen in a unique time in a unique space.

A photo-based, mixed media artist, Keith Stanton will be exhibiting a bit of his work beginning on First Fridays, May 2nd, 2008 at the Coup de Grace.

Keith Says:

My photographs are based on my curiosity with the underlying marketing forces that inundate suburbia.  I create miniature still-lifes of everyday suburban occurrences and then photograph them to exact my point of view. My intention is to attract the viewer into examining the familiarity of everyday life.

My choices in colors are part organic, part synthetic, yet distinctly artificial and they reflect my personal sentiment regarding the evolution of the suburban consumer. I add to the visual texture of a still-life by using toys as additional props.  These objects disposed of by others and discovered at thrift stores are a symbol of suburban consumption patterns.

I use an architect's scale during construction of the still-lifes to make sure they are visually in proportion. By shooting the photographs with a macro lens, I am able to control the scale that is captured on film. My process is the opposite of a landscape photographer and allows me to exhibit larger-than-reality photographs.

This affords the viewer the opportunity to expand their worldview beyond mundane suburbia.

A few words from Napoleon:

I am proud to be identified as an Asian American, Filipino American to be precise.  Filipino as my intrinsic heritage and American is also a great part of my identity.  The latter is where my awareness for democratic and progressive ideologies coalesced.  The United States has become the land that nurtured me to live and express freely this body of work.  Having the two cultural identities, one in which I was born with and which instilled my basic customs, and the other, which awakened my mind and another lifestyle, is more than any artist could ask for.

I continue to be a student of life and art for my life inspires my arts, and my art embodies my life.  There is always something to discover when art guides one’s life.  These recent works are part of my self-discovery that has helped me connect to a culture that I have taken for granted because I was too busy thinking of my future.  There is a saying that my parents have told me, “Sino man ang hindi lumingon sa pinangalingan; ay hindi makakarating sa paroroonan.” He who does not look back from where he came from, will not reach his destined place of aspiration.

My latest works, Sebastian and Celena are in homage to my great uncle and aunt, who I got to know through stories passed from generation to generation.

The Theme for March's exhibit at Coup de Grace will be "Ladies Night Out" featuring Sharon Ely Forsmo who will be showing work that is a continuation in the series of fancy, formal and very colorful dresses in her acrylic paintings. The paintings are works on paper using a permacolor ground and multi-layered color to create bold chromatic compositions and luscious textural qualities. 

The exhibit will start with First Friday's, March 7th from 6 to 10 PM , then continue for Art Detour on Saturday the 8th from 10 AM to 6 PM and Sunday the 9th from Noon to 6 PM.

The first 10 ladies to arrive each day during the 3 day Art Detour event, will receive a signed print of Daughter of Jerusalem by Nancy Grace from the book cover of "Soulgasm". (8 1/2 " x 11")  In addition, the first 10 ladies to arrive each day will receive a signed print of Sharon Ely Forsmo's piece Color Cups (22" x 30").

Coup de Grace Gallery invites you to view our ever growing, ongoing exhibit of the works of Chris Hardy, a self-taught Phoenix born artist.

Chris' art defies categorization.  Initially one can see the influences of Warhol with his repeated use of iconic subjects.  But, unlike Warhol's work, Chris' work is unpolished, raw, and even naïve.  In Chris' work there is no "factory" aesthetic, but rather the reflection a solitary artist; struggling with his visions and his materials.  It seems somehow appropriate that Chris has selected the term "Suburban-Folk" to describe his style.

But, standing alongside the pop/folk aspects to Chris' work is his emphasis on transposable features.   Many of his works invite the viewer to become participant in his art.  It's something that is better experienced than described.  And to experience it in the company of the artist, with his detailed descriptions and explanations is both engaging and heart-breaking.

"Turn your own world", a piece by Don Kenworthy will be on display during December at Coup de Grace.

Metal artist, Don Kenworthy draws on imagination to sculpt raw metal into finished pieces that look as though they were always meant to be.  Working with steel, copper, stainless steel and other metals, Don fashions ideas into existence.  His unique ability to bring out the natural tones, colors and textures of metal compels us to touch it.

Don has been working with metal since age 14.  "Nature is my inspiration, I like working with metal because it's like working with the earth".
