Partnership Hosts ‘Pop Up Park’ at CityScape

Want to enjoy the Phoenix winter during the workweek, but can’t fit a frisbee into your briefcase or backpack?
Head over to CityScape where they and the Downtown Phoenix Partnership are hosting a lunchtime “Pop Up Park” at Patriots Square. Lunch-goers can soak up the sunshine and socialize with fun – and free – activities each weekday from 11 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
You can check out games like Scrabble, Jenga, and cornhole, or take a loan out from the lending library where books and magazines are also available, courtesy of the Downtown Phoenix Ambassadors. Filling out the picnic experience are lawn chairs, blankets and, yes, Frisbees. DJs William Reed and Sean Watson will provide the soundtrack every Thursday and Friday, respectively.
Scheduled to run through the spring, it’s the perfect opportunity to take your sack lunch outside or stop by a nearby eatery for a bite to go.

Signature Events Celebrate Arizona Centennial

It’s February 2012 and Arizona is officially turning 100 years old!
Downtown Phoenix will come alive in celebration and there will be something for everyone who wants to join the birthday party. Here are some of the signature events honoring our great state.
Arizona Best Fest
Saturday, February 11, 12:00 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Sunday, February 12, 12:00 p.m. to 6 p.m.
A FREE street extravaganza takes over the Arizona State Capitol, including mainstage headliners (Gin Blossoms, Michelle Branch, Jerry Riopelle and George Bensen); educational traveling museums cultural villages; a Western town; an historical motorcycle tour; Arizona storytellers theater; Arizona wines and craft beers; Arizona 100 art show; family fun zone and much more.
Centenarian Brunch SOLD OUT
Tuesday, February 14, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Celebrating Arizona people, companies and nonprofit organizations that have turned 100. Hosted by Pat McMahon, and featuring Governor Jan Brewer and other Arizona leaders at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel. This event is (literally) a living history of our state.
Fandango! Arizona – the “Gala of a Century”
Tuesday, February 14, 5:30 p.m.
This grand affair in the North Ballroom of the Phoenix Convention Center is the capstone Centennial Signature event. It begins with cocktails and a silent auction, and the proceeds of which will help underwrite Arizona Centennial activity dedicated to education. The evening also will include vast panoramas of Arizona landscapes, videos, and a musical highlight with the Phoenix Symphony playing, for the first time, portions of Ferde Grof’s Grand Canyon Suite. The 11th Annual Melrose on 7th Avenue Street Fair and Classic Car Show is seeking both food and merchant vendors. The event will be held on Saturday, March 3rd, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on 7th Avenue between Indian School and Campbell.
Originally consisting of a few six foot tables, a few dozen classic cars and a few hundred people, the m7 Street Fair has grown to over 140 booths, food, rides and crafts for the kids, live music and over 200 classic cars. In ten years this award winning event has become one of the most anticipated events of the year.
Organizers expect between 18,000-20,000 to attend.
There will be live music sponsored by Stinkweeds and Local First Arizona, a classic car show and the ONE Community Healthy Living Expo.

Phoenix Art Museum hosts 4th Annual Walkabout, Sunday, January 29, 2012
WHAT: Walkabout is a weekend event for the community to celebrate world culture through a wide variety of entertainment such as African drumming and dancing, flamenco performances, Japanese flute music, storytelling and more; historical lectures including history of Arizona architecture, Frank Lloyd Wright mini-tours; and hands-on activities, including sketchbook making and Chinese brush painting. (All Walkabout performances and activities are included with Museum general admission.)
WHERE: Phoenix Art Museum, located at the northeast corner of Central and McDowell. This is an indoor/outdoor event.
WHEN: Sunday, January 29, 2012, open to the public at 12:00 pm. The last event of the day begins at 4:00 pm.
WHY: Walkabout is a fun event with an opportunity to engage in global cultural activities for every member of the family, inspired by the Museum’s international collection of art. Phoenix Art Museum presents this event annually as part of its continuing mission to enlighten, entertain and stimulate the minds and imagination of every member of the community it serves. From the Wire | Civic Space Park Kicks Off Afternoon Concert Series – UPDATE

The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department is bringing live music to the downtown lunch scene with the Civic Space Lunchtime Concert Series at Civic Space Park, 424 N. Central Ave. The concerts are set to kick off on Wednesday, Feb. 8 and will take place every Wednesday from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the park’s outside amphitheater stage through the second week of May. The concerts are free to the public and will feature outstanding performing and visual arts.
Well-known Arizona Blues artist Hans Olson will headline the opening concert Feb. 8. Olson is recognized as one of the best “harp-in-a-rack” players in the world. He has recorded over 70 of his original songs on independent record releases and has been an award winning performing musician since 1972. Future performances will include: Gustavo Angeles/Latin Pop; Phoenix College Big Band; Mike Torres/Tribute to Carlos Santana; The Irish Culture Center Performance Academy and many more.
Concertgoers are encouraged to take Light Rail to the Park, which has stops right at the park’s entrances. Metered or pay parking is available on street or in nearby lots or garages.
UPDATED CALL TO ARTISTS: The City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department is currently looking for performing artists as well as visual artists to display their works:
• The City provides all sound, stage and marketing of the event, display easels and sometimes booths for enhanced presentations (depending on participation)
• Funds are currently limited (can afford solo artists, but not limited to singles). We hope to raise sponsorship dollars in the very near future for an awesome summer concert series and start the fall with a full five day a week schedule
• All artists would have a tremendous amount of exposure, be able to record their performance and we may even be able to video some performances and show on our Phoenix 11 TV station
