World Championship Hoop Dance Contest at the Heard
February 4, 2008 by Lyle Plocher commentThe Hoop Dance contest is truly a world championship, as hoop dancers from the U.S. and Canada representing many Native nations converge on one of the U.S.'s most acclaimed Native cultures and art institutions with one intent: Capture the title of the world's best Hoop Dancer. In stunning displays of dance moves, athletic prowess and glittery regalia, the contestants wield up to 50 hoops, creating birds, flowers, globes and other patterns while dancing to the rhythmic beat of Native song and drum groups. The contestants, ranging in age from under 2 to over 80, are cheered on by a growing crowd of fans from across the United States and Canada; last year, over 10,000 people visited to cheer on their favorite son or daughter to achieve hoop glory.
