Burton Barr Central Library will host an exhibit of artist-made books and collage by Ashlee Weitlauf titled “On the Table,” Jan. 2 – 29 at the library’s @Central Gallery, 1221 N. Central Ave. A free artist reception will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4. Refreshments will be served.

Weitlauf’s work is influenced by early American printed pamphlets, including Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense” and Henry David Thoreau’s “Civil Disobedience.” She challenges viewers to not only ask questions about the world we live in but to take an active role in society. In this body of work, Weitlauf pays homage to America’s early pamphleteers and addresses topics such as the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and America’s reluctance to recycle.

In 2006, Weitlauf received a Master of Fine Arts degree in printmaking and book arts from Arizona State University. She is currently a senior library specialist in the Preservation Department of Arizona State University Library.

Each month, @Central gallery hosts a new exhibit featuring work by emerging Arizona artists. Visit the gallery on the first Friday of each month for an artist’s reception then take a shuttle to Artlink First Friday, a free self-guided tour of downtown Phoenix galleries and art spaces.
