    Heard Museum to Host ‘Movie Mondays’ Again This Week

    Heard Museum Brings Fun Indoors With ‘Movie Mondays’

    If you haven’t yet, it’s time to check out Movie Mondays at the Heard Museum.
    On Monday, August 10 at 1:30pm, the museum will be showing Waterbuster, a 2006 documentary chronicling the dislocation and relocation of the Mandan-Hidatsa-Arikara Nation of North Dakota due to a dam that inundated their homeland along the banks of the Missouri River. The 79-minute film is also the personal story of the director’s family, whose life choices were influenced by this powerful reshaping of the landscape.

    Anchored Downtown

    On the corner of Lincoln Street and Central Avenue in downtown Phoenix is a big warehouse for which there are even bigger plans.

    “It’s called The Anchor Manufacturing Building and it’s got a really, really great rich history,” said Steve Rosenstein, who co-owns the building with his wife Andi Rosenstein. The Anchor Building, built in 1928, was previously been a Ford dealership, a city bus garage, and a Hensley & Company beer distributorship.

    On Monday, July 27 and 1:30pm, the museum will show Turquoise Rose, 94-minute coming-of-age story. The film follows a Navajo college student named Turquoise Rose as she begrudgingly forgoes a trip to Europe with her friends to return to the Navajo Reservation and take care of her ailing grandmother.

Thanks to our beautiful new convention center and hotel in Downtown Phoenix, I invited the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers to host their international conference in Phoenix. The conference would bring more than 1,000 attendees to the city to experience great new dining and entertainment. We would all love to see the streets and restaurants downtown full of Electrical Workers.

    ‘Movie Monday’ is continuing at the Heard museum this month, beginning with a showing of Chiefs on July 6 at 1:30pm.
    This 87-minute documentary follows a team of American Indian teens from Wyoming Indian High School in the town of Ethete on the Wind River Indian Reservation as they strive to recapture the state basketball championship while battling against poverty, alcoholism, drugs and racism.

    Chicano Art Exhibit At Phoenix Art Museum

    Phantom Sightings: Art after the Chicano Movement, the first comprehensive consideration of Chicano art in two decades, will open at the Phoenix Art Museum on July 12. It explores the work of a young generation of artists working today after the initial social struggles of the Chicano movement, a larger political and cultural movement that in the late 1960s and early 1970s began campaigning for justice and equality for Americans of Mexican and Latin American heritage.

    On Monday, June 29, the Heard Museum will be holding another Movie Mondays event.
    They will be showing a 28-minute film called If Weather Permits at 1:30pm. Elisapie Isaac, a young, city-based Inuit filmmaker returns to her roots, the village of Kangirsujuaq in Nunavik. Here, she ponders the relationship between the Inuit past and the future in today’s world. In interviews with her extraordinary grandfather and with young people of the community, she finds more questions than answers. To bridge the growing gap between the young and the old, she lets Naalak, an elder, and Danny, a young policeman from Kangirsujuaq, tell us what they think. Isaac also speaks to her grandfather, now dead, and confides in him her hopes and fears.

    In Contemporary Rhythm Exhibit Closes This Sunday

    In Contemporary Rhythm: The Art of Ernest L. Blumenschein, an exhibit at the Phoenix Art Museum, will close on Sunday, June 14.

    Phoenix Art Museum celebrates the career of one of the most successful American artists of the early 20th century with the opening of the exhibit. A founder of the famed Taos Society of Artists, Blumenschein rocketed into the spotlight with his modernist approach to capturing the American West. This major retrospective, which opened on March 15, covers every aspect of the artist’s career and is the first Blumenschein exhibition in 30 years and the first in Arizona.

    Head over to the Heard Museum on Monday, June 8 at 1:30pm for the second Movie Mondays event of the summer.
    The museum is showing a 52-minute film called The Salmon Forest. On Canada’s Pacific coast, winding from the north end of Vancouver Island to the Alaskan border, is more than 400 kilometers of forested inlets and islands. This is the largest tract of intact temperate rainforest on Earth. Here, millions of spawning salmon that support dense concentrations of forest life, including grizzly bears, black bears, bald eagles, seals, otters, gulls and the Gitga’at First Nation, return every year. Bathed in mist and rain year-round, this is one of the most biologically diverse and lush places on the planet.

    First ‘Movie Monday’ At Heard Museum This Monday

    Movie Mondays are back to the Heard Museum this summer by popular demand.
    The first movie, Totem: The Return of the G’psgolox Pole, will show on June 1 at 1:30pm. In 1929, a 9-meter-high totem pole was stolen from the Haisla people’s village in northwestern British Columbia. The totem pole was discovered in 1991 in Stockholm, Sweden. The 70-minute film, released in 2003, follows the journey of the Haisla to reclaim their traditional mortuary pole.

    Local Breeze To Open Downtown This Weekend

    Shoot for the STARS is a program designed to teach the joys of photography to adults with disabilities.     Dreamland At The Phoenix Art Museum

    In an effort to promote filmmakers living and working in Arizona, No Festival Required and Movies at the Museum presents Dreamland, a documentary directed by University of Arizona film teacher Lisanne Skyler.

    The film will be shown for free on Sunday, April 26 at 1pm at the Whiteman Hall in the Phoenix Art Museum located at 1625 N. Central Ave.

    Get Your Design Fix At PCDF

    The Phoenix Contemporary Design Fair (PCDF) will return to downtown Phoenix April 24 to 25 for its fourth annual modern design showcase.

    Held from 10am to 5pm at The Anchor Manufacturing Building at 525 S. Central Ave, PCDF is a two-day event organized by About Design, LLC. to showcase the designs of international, national and local companies to anyone interested in modern design.

    Phoenix Art Museum Holds Train Tracks Quarter Finals

    Launched as a grassroots channel for local musicians to display their talent, The Train Tracks is the most innovative outlet for live music to ever hit Phoenix. Once a week, Valley artists ranging from single performers to entire bands, rockers to opera singers, perform acoustically live on the Metro Light Rail. Their raw, uncut performances are posted to thetraintracks.org where the general public votes for their favorite.

    Senior Design Exhibit Opens May 1

    Come celebrate the Senior Design Exhibit’s opening on May 1 from 7pm to 10pm, hosted by Arizona State University’s college of design students.

    The Senior Design Exhibit is the culmination of a year-long research and design application process. Students are given the option to select a track of study. Those who join InnovationSpace partner with other disciplines to research, design and develop products that serve real societal needs. Those who pursue Visual Communication select current social issues and create dynamic visual campaigns to reach their individual goals.

    Phoenix Convention Center First 100 Days

    The opening of the North Building at the Phoenix Convention Center completed the four and a half year expansion project, which nearly tripled the size of the Convention Center to a total of 880,000 square feet of rentable meeting and exhibition space. The Convention Center celebrates numerous accomplishments during the first 100 days of operation since welcoming the first conventions to the newly expanded facility.

    Vice Mayor To Host District 4 Breakfast Meeting

    Vice Mayor Tom Simplot will host his monthly breakfast meeting at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, April 23, at HomeTown Buffet, 1501 W. Bethany Home Road. Representatives from the Phoenix City Clerk’s Office will discuss the Voting Center Proposal, which aims to increase voter participation by providing additional methods to vote in municipal elections.

    Free Movie Night At Civic Space This Friday

    Head over to the new Civic Space Park on Friday, April 24 at 7:30pm for a free movie night featuring The Dark Night.

    The event is sponsored by Arizona State University students and is part of a larger safety initiative to encourage positive use of the brand-new park. Arrive early and you won’t need to bring your own snacks because free popcorn will be available on a limited basis. The movie will end around 10:30pm.

    Metro Board OKs Ads To Help Increase Revenue

    Metro passengers could be barraged with ads inside and outside the trains this fall as the transit agency tries to get through the grim economy with a new source of money.

    The Metro board voted unanimously Wednesday to reverse its no-advertisement policy and adopted a program that would be the most aggressive among new Western light-rail systems.

    Arizona Center Mall Files For Bankruptcy

    The high profile Arizona Center mixed-use development in downtown Phoenix filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Thursday, after its parent’s creditors balked at a debt-restructuring plan.

    Public Market Improvements Begin

    Improvements began Monday for the Downtown Phoenix Public Market’s permanent grocery store, which is expected to open in June.

    The 4000 square-foot retail space at 14 E Pierce St will be open five days a week and will serve as downtown Phoenix’s first local foods grocery store.

    One guest will pay the regular class price of $15 and the second guest will get in free.

    Yoga Fusion is a combination of yoga with alternative forms of movement including various dance styles and martial arts. It aims to give participants a workout and a way to release their stress in a new, entertaining way. Yoga Fusion does not require a background in either yoga, dance or martial arts.

    Phoenix sees fall in crime reports

    The number of reported crimes in downtown Phoenix has plummeted more than 50 percent since 1999, and it dropped nearly 10 percent from 2007 to 2008, police statistics show.

    The drop is the result of old-fashioned police work, a national decrease in crime and a downtown building spree that has transformed the neighborhood, police and other experts say.

    Brian Williams to receive 26th Cronkite Award

    Arizona State University announced on Monday that Brian Williams, anchor and managing editor of “NBC Nightly News,” will receive this year’s Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism.

    Williams will receive the 26th Cronkite Award on Nov. 18 at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel from ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

    Star Trek: The Exhibition enters final weeks

    Star Trek: The Exhibition is entering its final weeks after being open for six months at the Arizona Science Center. The exhibit includes authentic props and costumes from the television series and the movies, a replica of the U.S.S. Enterprise D-Bridge where visitors can sit in the captain’s chair, and a motion simulator where they will voyage through a battlefield. Visitors will also learn about Star Trek’s history, dating back 40 years. The exhibit is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will leave the Science Center on May 3.

    Tunes for Change at The Rhythm Room

    Bring your spare change and a $10 donation to the Tunes for Change concert at The Rhythm Room on Sunday, April 12.

    Tunes for Change benefits the participants of the Lodestar Day Resource Center in downtown Phoenix, which strives to help people end their homelessness. The concert, which is from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., features the sounds of The Market, Psych 101, Daryl Scairiot, and Dave Riley. The Rhythm Room is located at 10th Street and Indian School Road.
