Downtown Phoenix issues will be the focus of the September 20 mayoral debate at The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix.

Candidates Wes Gullett and Greg Stanton will face off at 6:30 p.m. in the Virginia G. Piper Auditorium on the campus of the UA College of Medicine – Phoenix.

The debate will be conducted before a community panel (participants to be confirmed at this time), moderated by Kimber Lanning, director of Local First Arizona, and will focus on issues facing the development of Downtown Phoenix, particularly economic concerns. The College of Medicine – Phoenix is a critical component of the Phoenix Biomedical Campus, a district identified by the City of Phoenix as an educational/research hub that can be an economic engine for the city. Studies have found that a built-out academic medical center in downtown Phoenix could generate more than $2 billion annually in economic impact.

Gullett and Stanton were the top two vote getters in the Aug. 30 Phoenix city election and face each other in the Nov. 8 general election in the contest to replace outgoing Mayor Phil Gordon.

Local First Arizona is a non-profit organization working to strengthen communities and local economies through supporting, maintaining, and celebrating locally owned businesses throughout the state of Arizona.

Seating is limited to the first 150 people. Parking is available off the northeast corner of Van Buren and 7th streets.

UPDATE: The community panel consists of Michelle White, owner of Fair Trade Café, Gregory Torrez, owner of the Azteca Wedding Plaza, and Phoenix architect and developer Lorenzo Perez of Venue Projects.
