The job of any good interviewer is to ask questions that prompt the subject to open up and reveal details that enable a story to be told. Take the good, weave in some of the bad for suspense and make it pretty. A good interviewee need not be well spoken, only honest. Then again, they're are some people who are so good at promoting people they don't need their words fixed.

Jenn Hoffman, who makes people look good for a living, is one of those people. Here's what the former Apprentice contestant had to say about living, working (sometimes) and playing (often) in downtown Phoenix. Here are her slightly edited words.

Favorite downtown activities? Once upon a time I would have said First Fridays, but they are becoming a little too hectic for my taste. I really like the burgeoning improv community that’s growing downtown. My favorite shows are at Space 55 on 7th Street and Pierce. Every 3rd Saturday you can see a live improved movie from The Phoenix Neutrino Project, phoenixneutrino.com. That’s probably the most exciting thing going on downtown for me. For a solo activity, I really like the simplicity of running in the urban setting. It’s a great way to exercise while exploring the neighborhoods, look at houses, people watch and get to know the city. Favorite place to work outside of the office? I’m a huge fan of pretending to work from The Clarendon Hotel. Every time I try to get work done there I end up floating around the pool with a mojito. If I’m actually trying to accomplish something, there are many great places to work downtown. The Burton Barr library is pretty cool. I also like crashing the kontakt magazine offices. If you try this, please tell Don I said “hi.” There are also many great coffee shops with free wifi. Free internet is essential for getting work done outside the office.

Best place to meet guys/girls (NOT ONLINE)? There are so many good ways to meet members of the opposite sex downtown. I always seem to meet guys when I’m a sweaty mess…while running, working out, doing yoga, getting a drink after exercising…etc. So I guess if you’re active and healthy, your hot sweaty pheromones will make the men come running. I’m also a big fan of buzzed flirtation, which can obviously happen at any of the fine drinking establishments downtown. Wanna get freak nasty with the totally incoherent guy at Bikini Lounge? Go for it!

What would you tell someone else about moving/living/playing downtown? Do it immediately! I’ll be honest and admit downtown living isn’t for everyone. If you crave all things suburban – such as cookie cutter houses, chain restaurants and breakfast places that are open on Monday, then this probably isn’t the place for you. But if you are urban minded, or more importantly open minded, you’ll love it here. I wasn’t a big fan of Arizona until I moved to downtown. Now, for the first time since moving to the Valley I feel like I finally found a great community. Also, buy a bike or a Vespa. In the weather friendly months it will make your travel time extra special.

Name game...lost leaf, roosevelt, carly's...ranked in order and why? Okay… Lost Leaf, then insert Rose and Crown for 2nd place, then Roosevelt for 3rd place, then Carly’s trails waaaaaaaaaay behind. There are several reasons. Lost Leaf: This bar rocks in every way. I have so many great memories here. Between the impressive beer selection, lying on the lawn outside with friends and the fact that they haven’t kicked me out for my shenanigans yet, I’m in love with Lost Leaf. Probably my favorite place to grab a drink. Rose and Crown: I’m pretty fond of the Rose and Crown. It’s a great neighborhood bar inside a beautiful historic house. I love that they serve good food. This cheese plate is so epic that it once caused a goat cheese dirty sanchez. Even grosser than it sounds. Roosevelt: It’s cool in small doses, I guess. I simultaneously love and loathe the moody, hipster atmosphere. But then again, that might just be a compliment as I myself might just be a self-loathing kind of gal’. I do love that they are always playing Radiohead. Maybe I do really like the Roosevelt. I’ll have to go back here soon and give it another look. Carly’s: This is hit or miss. Sometimes the service is bad and the food is icky. Other times it’s a decent place to hang. Space 55: I also must give a shout out to Space 55 Theatre on 7th Street and Pierce – my favorite place to see an improv show on Friday night before I hit up Lost Leaf.

Why downtown Phoenix? Is there really any place else to live in Phoenix? I swear that I hated Arizona until I moved downtown. Now the state has gained some appeal just from my experience down here. If you could improve one thing, what would it be? More stuff please! We definitely can use more businesses, and particularly more businesses with expended hours and services. Other than that I’m very happy with my choice to live/play/work downtown. See… I got through an entire interview without mentioning the damn light rail even once! Oh. Crap. Oops.

Why didn't I think of that? Interview hot girls for downtown phoenix journal. Very clever! Keep up the good work!

FYI-

"Improv" is not a verb. It's an abbreviation of of a noun - "improvisation."

One does not "improv," they "improvise."

Neutrino is an "improvised film," not an "improved film."

BTW- Improved is the past tense of improve, which is the make better.

If improv were a verb, the past tense would be "improvved..."
but this word does not actually exist.

I have yet to go to Space 55... but seeing as how I am in complete agreement with the rest of her opinions on downtown spots, I will make it a point to check it out.

Ha! Jenn has been spoken for for some time now.
