Phoenix Art Museum to Host Dynamic Opening Night Kick-off to the Arts Season

Phoenix, AZ (August 27, 2008) – Celebrate the downtown Phoenix lifestyle during Urban Affair, the Valley’s premier urban living event, Friday, September 26, from 6 to 10 p.m.   Phoenix Art Museum hosts a cocktail reception that will be highlighted by several local, live arts performances.

Guests will experience a spirited atmosphere that will serve as a kick-off to the arts season.  The schedule includes:

. Live Performing Arts – by local artists and representatives of performing arts organizations  
. Culinary Arts – iconic downtown restaurants and chefs serving a “progressive tasting menu” throughout the evening
. Visual Arts – professional and amateur photographers and filmmakers will document daytime scenes and nightlife
 
“The Urban Affair reflects the growing amount of activity and energy in downtown Phoenix and so this year’s event will be even bigger and better,” said Mayor Phil Gordon. “Because we have more people living downtown and more arts and cultural options in our urban core than ever before.”

This year, Urban Affair will be a week-long series of happenings providing Phoenix area residents the opportunity to explore Downtown Phoenix and all it has to offer.

A local Band called Decades, will be playing a variety of "live music" on 3 separate Saturday evenings, with the first event happening on Saturday, September 6th from 8 to 11 PM. 

My headline might have confused you, the Band which has been together for 7 years playing in the Valley, doesn't play music from the 50's, all the Band Members are in their 50's.  What they will be playing though is a variety of dance oriented music. featuring classic rock, country and Motown.

The 5th Ave Cafe is located on the southwest corner of 5th Ave & Thomas.

A new, permanent Gallery at the Arizona Science Center will be openng to the public on Monday, September 1st.  The Grand Opening hours will be 10 AM to 5 PM. 

My Digital World is a place where kids, parents, teens and teachers alike can explore how e-mails are sent around the world, play with image resolution and even get a chance to distort their own face.  In addition, visitors can play music without even picking up an instrument!  Digital strings of light hand from overhead and all you have to do is run your fingers throught to create drum beats, guitar chords and even farm animal sounds!  Plus much, much more.

Luckily, the Dodgers have managed to lose their last five.  I feel like throwing in the towel but the standings say we're still in first place.  Right now it appears that neither the Dodgers nor the Dbacks want a playoff spot.  This weekend the two chokers will play each other here at Chase Field on Friday, Sat and Sunday to see who can choke the hardest.  There should be over 40,000 frustrated fans for all three games.  If you haven't made it to a game yet this season, this is a good weekend to do it.

Today marked the first day of Class on the ASU Downtown Phoenix Campus and the first day in history for the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.  It's amazing that this great facility was built in such a short period of time.  read more about the facility

Since I didn't see the major media lurking around the campus, I thought I would bring you a few pics to let you see what some of the students experienced on their first day.

The first photo captures students trying to figure out how to pay the unmanned parking box in the parking lot just across Roosevelt from the Cronkite Building.

The second photo captures a few students entering the new building.  The third photo shows the info desk on the first floor inside the Cronkite Building. The fourth photo shows construction workers hard at work completing what will be a beautiful plaza between the University Center & the Cronkite Building.

This 1920's Bungalow has a huge porch just waiting for someone to lounge on. It has hardwood, tile and pergo floors and unfinished wood ceilings.
