www.silverplatter.info covers most of the venues downtown. The nice part about looking for a live show these days is that almost every band has a myspace page. You don't have to wait for a band that you know and love. Whenever you feel like seeing a show look up who's playing on silverplatter and then hear a sample of their music on myspace. I'm sure you'll find something to get into. The Phoenix music scene is much better than one might expect.
I also found a nifty calendar called Phoenix Agenda - "The independent concert listing for Downtown Phoenix". Unfortunately I could not find it online. This was volume #1 for April so it may be still be coming.

Thanks Mark. I'm moving to Phoenix from DC in August and I was really sad about leaving DC's live music scene. It looks like some of the venues in Phoenix have a lot of potential and draw some great bands!
You're welcome and thanks for commenting. I hope you'll be moving downtown. We wouldn't want you to fall into the abyss of red tiled roofs and Bed Bath and Beyonds!
Neither would I! I'll be working on a PhD at the downtown ASU campus so I'm definitely hoping to live downtown. I fell in love with the Roosevelt district when I was there so I'm hoping to find an apartment or guest house not too far away.
Yeah, that area is cool. The Lost Leaf and Rooselvelt's are two of my favorite places to grab a pint. Welcome to Phoenix in advance. If we can be of any assistance feel free to ask. mark_shinkonis@hotmail.com
Thanks! It's a big move and I have a feeling I'll need all the advice I can get. Reading this blog has been really helpful and with all the art/music/public market/development news I've read on here it seems like I'm only going to go through partial culture shock once I get there.
Yeah it's better than I thought it would be and another nice part about living downtown is that the airport is real close ($12 cab ride) if you must get out for a weekend. Be advised that you're moving here during the worst of our weather. August is hot hot hot. Bring sun block and sun glasses.
Unfortunately that's when the semester starts. On the brightside, once I've survived August I should be fine for the rest of the year, right?
3/4 of the year is great weather. August is the worst. And I'm sure you've heard it before but it's "dry heat" which makes a big difference.
