Chris Hardy at Coup de Grace - Part 2
October 25, 2007 by Lyle Plocher commentChris Hardy is a Phoenix-born, self-taught artist and the founding member of the “Phoenix Stuckists”, a local chapter of “Stuckism International” movement.
At its core, the Stuckist school actively confronts the spiritually bankrupt -shock for the sake of shocking- culture of instant celebrity that has come to dominate post-modern/conceptual art scene and advocates a return to more traditional values that emphasize the amateur artist’s personal struggles, failures, discoveries and triumphs.
Building upon this philosophy, Chris Hardy has merged folk, or self-taught, art techniques with a pre-occupation with celebrity and cultural, or historic, icons and created a style which he has labeled “Suburban-Folk”.
His style; with its emphasis on line drawing, bold fields of color, and compositions that require the viewers’ active participation, is quickly identifiable, visually appealing, and surprisingly unique.
Coup de Grace Gallery is the first gallery to show a large body of Chris’ work. We hope you’ll visit us this upcoming First Friday, 11/2 from 6 to 10 PM and catch the debut of an emerging Phoenix artist.
The Gallery is located at 707 S. 3rd St in Downtown Phoenix.
